About Us
Hi, I’m Ed Giles – the founder of Path Out of Pain.
I’m a certified Holistic Life Coach and Mindbody Practitioner specializing in chronic pain recovery.
Hi, I’m Ed.
A former chronic pain sufferer turned coach who helps you get your life back from chronic pain.
When I was 17, I crashed my car which started an 8 year journey with whiplash, shoulder bursitis, chronic back pain, and sciatica.
Over 10 years later, I feel beyond grateful and proud that I recovered from all of my chronic symptoms through the Tension Myotisis Syndrome (TMS) approach.
Currently, I use the knowledge and tools I learnt during my recovery process to help people in chronic pain find lasting relief from their symptoms so they can live freely and happily again.
Here are a few of the ways I can help you:
- Struggling with an MRI diagnosis that says you will be in pain forever? I’ll help you determine what is causing your pain and whether you can get better (most people have abnormalities on their MRIs yet live pain-free which means that no matter what your MRI says you have the potential to be pain-free too)
- Do you have the knowledge and tools that help your pain but can’t take action? I’ll help you implement the tools that reduce your pain with a structured treatment plan.
- Have you tried lots of treatments and nothing is working? I’ll help you understand why conventional medicine hasn’t worked for you and guide you to use tried-and-tested tools that are effective at reversing chronic pain symptoms.
For many years I followed the traditional medical path to chronic pain management. I got a diagnosis and received treatment with medications and steroid injections.
But these treatments didn’t reduce my pain in the slightest!
So I tried physiotherapists, osteopaths, massage therapists, chiropractors, Pilates, and acupuncture. Years passed, I spent thousands of pounds, and I dedicated thousands of hours to detailed stretching plans.
But I was still in pain!
Eventually, the pain grew worse. It moved from my right shoulder to my left, into my back, my neck, and shooting down my right leg.
I was told multiple times that I had to live with my pain and manage it. I felt devastated.
The words, “You will be in pain forever”, rang around my head. Was this my life sentence?
But no one had answered satisfactorily, “What is causing my pain?!”
I suspect you’re here because you have experienced something similar.
At my lowest point, I stopped all treatments for my chronic pain and gave up on trying to find relief.
But that’s when a miracle happened.
I remembered a book called ‘The Mindbody Prescription’ by Dr John Sarno. I hated the book when I first heard of it and remembered calling it “psuedosciency bullshit”.
Nonetheless, I felt really desperate and devoured the book. Light bulb after light bulb flashed as I scribbled in the margins and highlighted whole sections.
In these pages Dr Sarno detailed his theory that many people with chronic pain don’t have a physical explanation and that the pain results from of internal rage and conflict. He called this Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS).
My key insights included:
- I can’t express anger
- I am a perfectionist and a ‘goodist’
- My symptoms move around
- My pain gets worse with stress
- Most cases of chronic pain don’t have a structural cause
- Chronic pain can be caused by repressed emotions in a process called Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS)
- People can get better from TMS
I can recover from Tension Myositis Sydrome
I started my journey into learning to free myself from chronic pain.
Firstly, I read more books to more deeply understand where my chronic pain came from. Secondly, I retrained my brain that I am safe to feel my symptoms and emotions through mindfulness, affirmations, and expressive journaling.
Alongside the internal work, I wholeheartedly reengaged with running, press-ups, lifting weights, playing tennis, and yoga. Anything that involved movement.
I knew my body was healthy and I wanted to use it to it’s fully potential.
I felt free.
A few years down the line I have retrained with some giants in the field: Dr. Schuiner and Hal Greenham to learn Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) and practical ways to help others, just like you, get their life back from chronic pain.
This brings me back to you.
I built Path Out Of Pain on a bedrock of gratitude for this life changing work. What people can achieve constantly inspires me.
I pass the torch to you with the conviction that the light of this work brings hope and real, lasting ways to feel better.
You deserve to feel better.
Let’s real talk for a minute. The process of recovery doesn’t offer all sunshine and roses.
It doesn’t follow a straight line. We hop on a ride that goes up, down, and loops-de-loops.
Sometimes it seems like we haven’t even moved from our starting point.
Even after doing this work for years some days I experience a headache or other bodily pains. Some days I can’t seem to put one foot in front of the other.
But after learning the Mindbody tools and knowledge these symptoms pass quickly.
This is freedom from chronic symptoms.
Let’s walk together on your recovery path towards freedom from chronic pain.
